Profile
Professor Van Ophoven's medical specialization lies at the crossroads of urology and neurology. For decades he has been engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder and pelvic floor dysfunctions caused by innervation disorders.
The department currently headed by Arndt van Ophoven, is one of Germany's leading centers for neurourology. It takes care of patients with spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Parkinson's disease or stroke. Since functional problems can occur at a relatively young age, not only adults but also children are treated here.
Prof.Van Ophoven is a member of various national and international professional associations including the International Continence Society (ICS), the International Spinal Cord society (ISCOS), the American Urological Association (AUA), the European Association of Urology (EAU), the Society for Infection and Inflammation in Urology, and the European Society for the Study of BPS/IC (ESSIC). He is an active contributor to guideline groups on non-traumatic and inflammatory lower urinary tract dysfunctions.

Prof. Van Ophofen's areas of expertise include various functional disorders and neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunctions, including:
- Neurologic urinary tract disorders associated with chronic diseases (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, dementia, cauda equina syndrome), acute conditions (traumatic paraplegia, stroke), malformations (e.g., spina bifida), or spinal cord tumors.
- Continence disorders.
- Overactive bladder.
- Inflammatory diseases of the genitourinary system and pelvic pain syndromes (including sacral and pudendal neuromodulation).
- Refractory bladder pain (interstitial cystitis) or pudendal nerve pain (pudendal neuralgia).
