The completely renovated specialized clinic for thyroid and parathyroid surgery was opened at the Sana Multidisciplinary Hospital in Hürth, Germany, in April 2022. From the very beginning, its services were in great demand: more than 1,000 patients with thyroid and parathyroid diseases were operated on in a short period of time. Thus, the Center has immediately become the undisputed market leader for such interventions not only in the entire regional conglomeration of Cologne, but also internationally.
Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Hans Udo Zieren has more than 35 years of experience in the field of thyroid surgery. He and his long-term senior assistant, Dr. Marc Goebel, have already performed more than 11,000 thyroid and parathyroid operations on patients from all over Germany and abroad. These are interventions of all degrees of complexity with a high proportion of severe cancers and reoperations. In addition to all types of conventional surgical interventions for benign and malignant diseases, the Center also performs minimally invasive treatments such as the destruction of nodules by thermal ablation.
The specialists of the Center are experienced in all common minimally invasive technologies (MIT, MIVAT, ABBA). Moreover, the Center has developed its own technique. It allows to remove almost any volume of thyroid tissue through only one small incision on the anterior surface of the neck as one intact fragment, which is very important for its appropriate pathology analyses.
For maximum protection of vulnerable structures such as vocal cord nerves and parathyroid glands, the most up-to-date methods of operating field magnification, the finest instruments, microsurgical technologies and neuromonitoring are used during operations.
The spectrum of parathyroid gland surgery includes their autologous replantation. If total thyroidectomy results in impaired blood supply to the parathyroid gland, the latter is completely removed, divided into many small pieces of tissue, and this "tissue pulp" is then transplanted into a small muscle pocket with a good blood supply. Once the parathyroid tissue has taken root, the new site starts to produce the parathyroid hormone.
The Cologne Regional Thyroid Center specialists perform all types of thyroid and parathyroid gland surgeries for benign and malignant diseases. Specific focus areas include:
