Treatment of functional and metabolic disorders
The Ikaneum Institute for Gastrointestinal Disorders at the Jewish Hospital in Hamburg (headed by Prof. Peter Layer) specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic abdominal disorders. It offers a comprehensive management of irritable bowel and irritable stomach syndromes. Therapeutic procedures are preceded by thorough examinations, which comprise laboratory tests (including detection of parasites and other pathogens), as well as ultrasound and endoscopic examinations. If necessary, basic studies are supplemented by functional tests, as well as highly specialized procedures, some of which are hardly to be found at other medical facilities - such as stomach, small & large intestine manometry and a rectal barostat procedure, or a gastric sensitivity test.
In this way, at Ikaneum both the organ function and the microbiomes of the patients are examined. This makes it possible to customize patient therapy strategies.
The treatment is based on:
- the most modern medications;
- diet therapy;
- special intestinal massage;
- psychotherapy;
- psycho-oncology;
- "intestinal hypnosis."
- biofeedback - training.
These treatments are partially applied in patients with impaired bowel emptying function. They are supplemented by various types of motility training. Such disorders are also diagnosed using a multimodal approach.
Patients with pancreatic diseases are offered respiratory and secretin tests in addition to standard studies, such as laboratory or radiology exams.
Thus, Ikaneum is a new kind of medical facility, where a high degree of competence is combined with a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic options, and where physicians, nutritionists, dieticians and psychologists all work under the same roof. This is why patients with a long medical history are often referred here after unsuccessful treatment in other hospitals. At Ikaneum, many years of effective experience are complemented by state-of-the-art research results, which are flexibly integrated into the overall concept. This approach is in line with the basic principle proclaimed by the founder of the Jewish Hospital, Solomon Heine: “Humility is the crown of all virtues”.
