Since September 2005, Professor Trautwein leads the Clinic of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Metabolic Disorders and Intensive Care. After completing his studies in Mainz and Tubingen, he worked at the Centre for Internal Medicine of the Hanover Medical School in the Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology, among other positions he was the Clinic Deputy Director. His expertise lies in the treatment of liver and metabolic disorders as well as gastrointestinal tumours.

Barrett's oesophagus is a precancerous lesion that develops due to a chronic inflammatory process which results in the degenerayion of the squamous epithelium of the esophagus into columnar epithelium. There is a high probability that the disease will develop into an adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.
The disease, like many other dangerous conditions, is almost undetectable in its first stages. It is generally believed that liver cirrhosis is related to alcohol, but there may be many more causes. It is extremely important to undergo treatment, otherwise the disorder can be fatal due to progressive liver damage.

The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver. Our body needs this fluid to break down fats obtained from food. The fats are then broken down and absorbed in the duodenum, where the bile gets through the bile duct.
