About the clinic

With a total of almost 40000 open-heart procedures performed since 1976 the clinic is one of the leading cardiothoracic surgery centers in North Rhine-Westphalia. Within the entire scope of adult heart surgery the top areas are the modern bypass operations, heart valve repair and surgical interventions to treat cardiac rhythm disorders. A major effort has been made in the recent years to find effective methods of the end-stage heart failure management. This has resulted in the development of a comprehensive artificial heart support system.

An atrial septal defect is a congenital abnormality. It is caused by the presence of an abnormal opening between the right and left heart chambers. Depending on the severity of the defect, it may not manifest itself at all, or may cause dyspnea, heart murmurs and other symptoms.
